I think the most under appreciated side of this motu proprio is that local bishops are now starting to begin to sense in which direction the Church is moving. For many years now, because of a lack of clear cut and direct guidelines from Rome and the Holy Father personally, they, mainly the older ones, have the impression that the 60s mentality is still the norm. Now that clear guidelines are given and the mind of the Holy Father made decisively clear, perhaps we'll be surprised to see many bishops fall in line?
As an anecdotal example, after many years of hearing that black as a colour for cassocks has been banned by the bishops, for priests and servers alike, we decided to ask the bishop himself when he visited and got a very surprising answer, one that many would not have though possible, given his track record. So, yes, things are moving, albeit slowly and I do not hope that the extraordinary form of the Mass will be celebrated here anytime soon for many reasons. But, hopefully we'll see more priests and bishops sentire cum ecclesia.
O good Saint Gerard, powerful intercessor before God and Wonderworker of our day, we call upon thee and seek thy aid. Thou who on earth didst always fulfill God’s designs, help us to do the holy Will of God. Beseech the Master of Life, from Whom all paternity proceedeth, to render us fruitful in offspring, that we may raise up children to God in this life and heirs to the Kingdom of His Glory in the world to come. Amen.

ReplyDeleteThis "extraordinary Mass" business is amusing. For a millennium and a half or more, the only Mass in the West, was the "extraordinary" one?!
