Extraordinary Ascension High Mass

Traditional Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord
Solemn High Mass
in the Extraordinary Form
of the Roman Rite ('Tridentine')
Birmingham Oratory

8pm - Thursday, May 1st 2008

"For those who wish to observe the scriptural anniversary of the Ascension, forty days after Easter, there will be a Solemn High Latin Mass in the Extraordinary rite (1962 Missal) on Ascension Thursday, May 1st, at 8 p.m."

Most Catholics in England & Wales are forced now to celebrate the 40th day of Easter, the Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ on the following Sunday (ie. 43 days after Easter). Here is the perfect opportunity to observe this important feast of Our Lord on the day it is properly intended. Tailored Mass books and full translations are provided, which will make it perfect for newcomers to the Tridentine Rite.

Please do remember to begin a Novena to the Holy Spirit; 9 days of prayer before Pentecost, beginning this Friday, in the same way as the Apostles and Our Lady. The transferral of the Feast to Sunday loses this important connection, which all novenas are based upon.

  1. We're privileged to celebrate the Ascension on Thursday, which, as it falls on May Day, is a public holiday. Also, on the same day, I'm privileged to celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker at our Chapel. @ great feasts on the same day.

  2. I thought the latest missive from the PCED said both forms of the Roman Rite have to observe the feasts on the same day? In other words, if the bishops have decided to transfer the Holy Days to the nearest Sunday, QED, we must all transfer to the nearest Sunday, whatever form of the rite we celebrate. Very unfortunate.

Still, if any individual bishop wants the feasts celebrated on the actual day of the feast in his diocese, he is free to allow it even over against the Bishops' conference!

  3. This is a good move at the Birmingham Oratory. Thought the Obligation has been moved to Sunday, there is nothing to stop priest's observing the Solemnity of the Ascension in the Extraordinary Form on the customary Thursday, though it will not count as a Holy Day of Obligation. They are keeping the Ascension at the London Oratory on the Sunday before.
